When to update your digital skin

Snakes shed their skin 4 to 12 times a year.

In the world of tech, a “skin” is the outward appearance of an interface, and as an artist and entrepreneur, your “skin” consists of your logo, your colors, your website, your IG pic, etc. It’s the whole look and feel, wrapped around you like a digital skin, that’s used to share your work with the world.

But how do you know when it’s time to change?

Step 1

Like a dermatologist checking every mark, give your skin a full body scan. Look at every page of your website, look at your font, your logo, your graphics, your newsletter, and your social media.

Step 2

As you’re observing each of these items, ask yourself: Does it feel good to live in this? Does this feel like me? I personally always know an update is in order when I start to get that “I want to rip my skin off my body” sensation upon looking at my site.

Step 3

If everything feels great, don’t touch it. You’re good! But if any part doesn’t feel good, know that it’s time to shed that skin!

Step 4

While you’re working to shed what no longer works for you, you can simultaneously start to grow a whole new layer of skin. This might mean a website redesign, a logo revamp, swapping your colors, etc. Sometimes it’s a complete letting go and starting over, but other times, you just need to change one thing to feel better in your digital skin.

Snakes shed their skin because (1) they’ve outgrown it, (2) it’s damaged/infected and needs repair, or (3) it’s old and they want a new protective casing!

We humans really aren’t so different. Maybe you’ve outgrown what was there. Maybe you have broken links or an outdated platform and need to fix it for technical reasons. Or perhaps it’s just been a while, and your skin is feeling old and like it’s no longer doing it’s job as well as it could. These are all reasons why you might need to update your digital skin, and if you do better with specifics, here you go!

Update your brand / website if:

  1. It doesn’t accurately reflect your services.

  2. It doesn’t feel like you.

  3. The caliber of its design is less than the caliber of your work.

  4. You aren’t excited to send it to people.

Can you relate to any of the above? Let’s talk! I love brainstorming and helping to develop a vision for your new skin.
